Travel surveys serve the purpose of collecting empiric transport data. This data is used for e. g.:
- Transport analyses
- Transport prognoses
- Transport modelling
- Distribution of revenues (in public transport)
For this, the Transport and Spatial Planning Institute applies different methods. The most common are censuses (in the field of transport technology) and observations and interrogations (in the field of transport behaviour). Besides the determination of the survey design, it is also important to determine the complexity of the survey – not always is an expensive complete count needed. Further more, one has to recruit and brief the survey staff as well as design a roster. After the census the interpretation has to be done. The Institute offers service in any of the phases.
